I've just jumped on the cloth diapering train. It's something I've wanted to do since the twins were born, but I could never seem to commit to the initial "start-up" fees. I know that in the long run, the savings are worth it, but when you're looking at an AIO Fuzzibunz diaper for 19.99...the thought of purchasing enough to make it through the day could make your heart stop!
I've been talking with other cloth diapering mama's, and we decided to go with the Kawaii diapers (www.theluvyourbaby.com). For one thing, they were cheaper than some of the bigger names, like Bum Genius and Fuzzibunz. For another, they were just stinking cute...yes, I am that shallow. They are working wonderfully, and the best part is that they come with two microfiber inserts for each cover as part of their price, so we have plenty of inserts for nighttime!
So, it's been a week of cloth diapering my toddler (whom we haven't started potty training just yet...with a new baby on the way, the timing isn't quite right). It's been going really well. Boyd loves wearing them, and our only problems have been to get him to wear pants because he prefers to wear only the diaper so he can rub the soft fabric on his tushie.
I admit my biggest fear has been of the poop. We discussed buying liners to put in there to catch the waste, but that seemed like it would be uncomfortable for him. We discussed a diaper sprayer, but we have 3 kids aged three and under...the thought of a live water cannon in the bathroom seemed like a bad idea. I know some come with shut off valves, but we haven't really shopped around for one just yet. So, I'm using the old school "dunk it in the toilet" method. This may sound stupid, but it wasn't until the night my diapers arrived that I came up with a solution to my fear of toilet dunking. The solution, my friends, was yellow rubber gloves. You may be sitting there thinking, "well duh, of course you don't use your bare hands" but honestly, that particular flash of brilliance never occurred to me in the 3 1/2 years I've contemplated cloth diapering. Perhaps if it had, I'd be writing about how I've been cloth diapering for 3 years instead of 1 week.
Our newest addition is due to be born in a week, and I can't wait to get her into her cute minky pink heart designer diapers. Already this week, I've kept 42 diapers (or so) out of landfills. It's hard to believe we were producing so much trash from one little kid. My next quest is to make cloth wipes. I can't wait!!
